Mesothelioma Survival Rate

Along with life expectancy, one of the most important pieces of information that mesothelioma sufferers can have is knowledge about their survival rate. This may be seen as a more positive statistic than life expectancy, as it deals with how long you can fight against the cancer and see success.

Survival Statistics for Mesothelioma Patients

After a diagnosis, some patients will live between four and 18 months. On average, patients with mesothelioma have about a 5 to 10 percent five-year survival rate. This can look grim at first glance, but it's important to remember that this is because it often takes decades before people begin to show signs of the condition, since mesothelioma doesn't develop immediately after asbestos exposure. That's why it's best to treat mesothelioma early. Your doctor can start tests once you tell him or her about any asbestos exposure.

Factors That Affect Mesothelioma Survival Rates

In addition to how early the condition is caught, a number of other factors play a role in determining how long you can live with mesothelioma. First is the stage of the cancer at the time of the diagnosis. There are four stages of mesothelioma, each of which has a different treatment plan and outlook. Stage I mesothelioma, for example, will often respond well to surgery and chemotherapy.

Where the tumor is located also makes a difference. A tumor in the lung is most common (pleural mesothelioma), but one near the heart (pericardial mesothelioma) is also possible. Those near the heart are harder to treat.

Your medical history and current health factor into this rate as well. If you have other illnesses or are in poor health, the chances of a lengthy survival go down. Those who are otherwise healthy will often see longer survival rates.
